New Headshots

Got some new headshots while out here in LA.  Check 'em out!

They're by Rick Stockwell who is actually based out of NYC. 

I've also read two books since I came to LA: Leaving Dirty Jersey by James Salant and Wasted by Marya Hornbacher.  And last night I started Homesick by Jenny Lauren.

I am a little homesick, I must admit.  I miss a lot of people in NYC/NJ.  And its hard to have fun out here without a car.  Although yesterday I did make it to the Hollywood Farmers Market, and managed to narrowly miss a sighting of Adrian Grenier.  On Thursday, OperaWorks is taking us to some shop on Ventura Blvd  where this guy who is a personal stylist is going to assess us and help us find some good outfits for auditions and other singer-ly things.  And I'm hoping to figure out a way to get into one of the preview performances of Eric Whitacre's new opera, Paradise Lost.  May as well, while I'm out here, right?

Still working on that. I'm scanning craigslist but its really hard to do from LA, because most people want you to come check out the apartment within a week of the time they post the add, so that you can move in by the 1st. So when I get back, it will be back and forth between NJ and Brooklyn again. But the apartment hunting is going into full swing. I HAVE to find a place. It was really easy to put it off before because I knew I had to pay for my place in Baltimore until the end of May, and then I knew I'd be in LA all of July, so it was easy to raionalize that I could save myself money by putting it off. But yeah, I can't put it off anymore. I need to be in ny. The commute and the constant back and forth is too much.

Craigslist is definitely a tough one. I think it's amazingly stressful how everyone waits till that last week or two. It'll work out though. :) August just may be a bit annoying.

Really? The first one is my favorite one. Hmph. Yeah, I'm not thrilled with the background either, but that's what we get for having this guy fly in from NY and set up a studio in one of the dorm apartments. I'm going to try to convert them to b&w later and see how they look.

The price for working with him in NY would have been $350 more than I paid him here in LA, and here all I had to do was walk downstairs in the same building. The price was too good to pass up, and I can deal with the portrait studio background for that.

Claudia would totally dress you up if you asked her. She used to do that for a living. Didn't she tell you about that? She used to work at all these high-end mens clothing stores, and guys would come in and be like, "I have a business trip and I need five days worth of hot sharp professional clothes" and she'd pick out their outfits. And she wouldn't charge you anything since you're her son and all.

Thanks! I don't know how long Rick is in LA. He's based out of NYC but I think he frequents LA a lot.

I'm still trying to find out the deal with the Whitacre. The official opening night is the 28th, which is the first night of my performance with OperaWorks, so I can't go to that. But there are these "previews". I just have to figure out how to get into one of those, I guess.

Yeah, I'm really missing NYC, being able to get everywhere, and also just being around so many friends, always having stuff to do and places to go. I guess if I spent more time in LA I'd have that here too, but, right now, I just kinda want to go home already.

Thanks! We got a super deal through OperaWorks. It was $100 for the makeup artist and $100 for the photographer. The photographer's usual charge is $450 for an entire afternoon shoot, which is like 4 to 5 hours. For this though, which was strickly headshots at a group rate, we only got to have about 30 minutes each. But he also gives you a CD and full rights, which is good.

I read Homesick a few months ago... it's quite scary and confronting, but towards the end I kind of got the feeling that she was wallowing in self pity... I don't know... maybe I'm just really cold hearted... the first three quarters of the book was really powerful though. I tried to look her up on a website to see how she is now but I think the domain name had lapsed...

Thanks :) The photographer is actually a classical singer from NYC who just does headshots on the side to make money. He was really cool. The makeup artist was AMAZING though. Totally A+.

I miss NYC too. I just can't seem to get into LA. Maybe its because I'm only here for such a short time, and I'm spending so much time working that I'm not really getting to see the city, but, yeah, I miss my NY.
