My cousin (who is considering a major in astro physics) had an away message up that said something about reading some Stephen Hawking. I was a bit jealous, really missing my days studying astro physics, so I said:

RautavaaraAngel (3:38:02 AM): Stephen Hawking *drools*
RautavaaraAngel (3:38:19 AM): that was ME drooling, not Stephen Hawking. Just to clarify.

Stephen Hawking is SO interesting. I love it. I'm not really into physics because I'm a biology major with emphases in Microbiology and Nursing and that is my science. Bio is my thing, but I wish I was more interested in taking physics so that he would make more sense sometimes. My fiancee is an english major but he is into physics and math. I think that's why I've shied away from physics...I hate...absolutely loathe math. Guess who won't be doing the finances!

Haha I wasn't big into math when I was in high school, but my teachers all seemed to think I was really good at it for some reason, and I remember my trig/pre-calculus teacher flipping a lid when I told her that I wasn't taking a math course in my senior year of high school cause I was too busy with music stuff. Haha. But after studying astro physics at Princeton I LOVE math, but not just like theoretical math, you know? Like if it's applied as it is in physics, I'm really happy. Although I really like theoretical physics too...

You know, it's funny, Mark got his PhD in theoretical mathematics from Princeton, but he can't keep track of his finances AT ALL. I offered to help him because I'm really anal about writing down everything I spend and making sure I never overdraw my account, but then I realized that he sort of doesn't need to make sure he doesn't overdraw his account because, well, he's got quite a bit in there...so he doesn't have to worry about balancing the check book and going over bank statements like me. Lucky ducky.

Haha. Hey! Sorry I missed you last week, and sorry if I haven't been commenting on any of your entries, cause I can't see them :( My computer is wacked and it was logging me out whenever I went to my friends page so I couldn't see any locked entries, but NOW it's absolutely and totally dead. It doesn't work AT ALL for anything, so right now I'm at Juilliard using their computers. Blech. This is going to make graduate applications difficult...

Ha!

I think Hawking has enough pop culture cache these days that just about everyone would get that joke :)

It's funny, after I finished undergrad (and even during, but especially after) I had this thirst for more empirical work and ended up devouring a pile of science books, mostly physics. If I had that part of my education to do over again I'd minor in physics.

And if I had an unreasonable amount of money to blow on a degree I couldn't even begin to justify and the time to do it in, I'd do the MA in The Philosophical Foundations of Physics at Columbia.

When I was taking astro physics at Princeton, I was never happier. And in fact, my prof asked me if I would like to switch over to Princeton completely (I went to Westminster and took classes at Princeton through the exchange program) and I think I will forever regret turning that down. I would do an undergrad degree in physics in a second if I could do it again. But alas, now I'm an unemployed music BA just like all my fellow classmates who didn't go into teaching. :(

Wow, what's this MA at Columbia about? What kind of crudentials do you need? Hmm...that sounds REALLY awesome....I'm sending in so many freaking applications...if it's not a total out of the ball park thing, maybe I'll go for it...Tell me more!

DARNIT! They want people who had undergraduates in either philosophy or physics. That counts me out :( Oh it looks like SUCH a cool program! I think that prof Brian Greene is giving a lecture this spring at the 92nd street Y in ny. I am definately going. It sounds like it'll be really interesting.

I just doubt that my general interest in physics and that fact that I've taken a few classes and read some cool books will be sufficient to stand up to other applicants who have masters in philosophy or physics. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

You never know. If you really are interested you should contact the dept chairs and request an interview.

I guess I could call and ask. I just think that if I actually ended up applying, it would be a total shot in the dark.

Hee, hee "RautavaaraAngel"
Seventh Symphony!
Which Angel Are you? Angel of Light?
------
What I find so amazing about Hawking is that despite all the obvious hardships, disabilities, etc... that he has to deal with, he is right up there and first and foremost with the latest cosmological breakthroughs! Most astrophysicists older than 30 have their best years behind them, but NOT this Lucasian Chair! His latest work on the reality of Black Holes is awesome, looking at it as an information system (a quantum "computer" as it were) amazing and fascinating, I mean the insight!!! I nearly freaked (burned) out following the equations...
Makes me want to go do Grad work at Cambridge...

I love Rautavaara!!! Actually that's funny you mentioned the 7th Symphony "Angel of Light" because that was the first piece of his that I ever heard, on 96.3 WQXR. After that I started checking out some of his other works. My favorite is Vigilia, an all-night vigil for Saint John the Baptist, sung in Finnish by the Finnish Radio Choir. That is definately one of my favorite works ever.

I think with Hawking, if he didn't have these disabilities, he would have never sat down and really got to work. It's my understanding that he was a bit of a slacker while at Oxford (but still got excellent grades, it's just that he was so brilliant that he hardly had to work at all to get them) and when he was about 23 or so and his illness set in, he began really sitting still for a bit and using his mind for the greatness it was meant to acheive.

There was an article recently in one of the science magazines I picked up recently on the Black Hole computer info theory thing, but I haven't gotten around to reading that particular article yet in full. But what little I did read of it was mind-blowing.

Makes me want to do my undergrad over...

LOL...that's really cute. Wow, you mentioned it before how interested you are in Physics...but now I really see more of that interest =)

hey! i found your journal by way of the "friend of a
friend" technique. you seem like an intelligent person
who has something worth while to say. if it's okay
with you, may i add you to me friends list? and of
course, i wouldn't mind if you add me to yours ;o)
later gator!
