My cousin (who is considering a major in astro physics) had an away message up that said something about reading some Stephen Hawking. I was a bit jealous, really missing my days studying astro physics, so I said:
RautavaaraAngel (3:38:02 AM): Stephen Hawking *drools*
RautavaaraAngel (3:38:19 AM): that was ME drooling, not Stephen Hawking. Just to clarify.

Date: 2004-11-16 02:00 am (UTC)You know, it's funny, Mark got his PhD in theoretical mathematics from Princeton, but he can't keep track of his finances AT ALL. I offered to help him because I'm really anal about writing down everything I spend and making sure I never overdraw my account, but then I realized that he sort of doesn't need to make sure he doesn't overdraw his account because, well, he's got quite a bit in there...so he doesn't have to worry about balancing the check book and going over bank statements like me. Lucky ducky.

Date: 2004-11-14 06:20 pm (UTC)I think Hawking has enough pop culture cache these days that just about everyone would get that joke :)
It's funny, after I finished undergrad (and even during, but especially after) I had this thirst for more empirical work and ended up devouring a pile of science books, mostly physics. If I had that part of my education to do over again I'd minor in physics.
And if I had an unreasonable amount of money to blow on a degree I couldn't even begin to justify and the time to do it in, I'd do the MA in The Philosophical Foundations of Physics at Columbia.

It looks like a fascinating program.

What I find so amazing about Hawking is that despite all the obvious hardships, disabilities, etc... that he has to deal with, he is right up there and first and foremost with the latest cosmological breakthroughs! Most astrophysicists older than 30 have their best years behind them, but NOT this Lucasian Chair! His latest work on the reality of Black Holes is awesome, looking at it as an information system (a quantum "computer" as it were) amazing and fascinating, I mean the insight!!! I nearly freaked (burned) out following the equations...
Makes me want to go do Grad work at Cambridge...

Date: 2004-11-16 02:10 am (UTC)I think with Hawking, if he didn't have these disabilities, he would have never sat down and really got to work. It's my understanding that he was a bit of a slacker while at Oxford (but still got excellent grades, it's just that he was so brilliant that he hardly had to work at all to get them) and when he was about 23 or so and his illness set in, he began really sitting still for a bit and using his mind for the greatness it was meant to acheive.
There was an article recently in one of the science magazines I picked up recently on the Black Hole computer info theory thing, but I haven't gotten around to reading that particular article yet in full. But what little I did read of it was mind-blowing.
Makes me want to do my undergrad over...
