I just finished reading The Kite Runner about an hour ago and I had a good cry.  I cried all throughout reading it too.  Its a pretty powerful book.  Wow.  Okay, onto the next read...

I also started a new oil painting.  I'll have to post a picture when I finish, although it may take a while.

I started learning music for next semester, and I'm getting all my junk together for my applications to Opera North and Opera Festival di Roma, which are just about the only two summer programs I could find whose deadline hasn't already passed.  I think I may also apply to be a TA at JHU CTY again, although they don't have that cool class in music and mathematics anymore, and the music theory class is in Carlisle, PA, this year, which is not exactly where I would want to spend three weeks of my summer, but its money and something good for my resume, so, we'll see.  There's also the language program up in Vermont.  I definately need to brush up on my Deutsch...

What are you all doing this summer?

beware opera festival di roma, i've heard really bad things about it. really, really bad things.
you may also want to look into seagle, and brevard.

Really? What kind of bad things? Please tell me before I audition and possibly end up spending a huge bundle on it! I know a few people at school that have done it and haven't talked to them about it yet, but, yeah please fill me in.

I didn't know Brevard was happening anymore. At least that's the word I heard, so I didn't even look into it. And I would assume their auditions are over by this time of the year anyway.

What's Seagle?

brevards auditions arent until february. i cant even sign up for mine bc its not listed on the site yet.

seagle is a pay to sing run by the director of the fort worth opera. they dont normally do live auditions- its usually a tape. http://www.seaglecolony.com ( i think, otherwise google seagle music colony)

OFdR, from waht I've heard is basically a scam. they promise you a lot and then you get nothing. search the forums at classical singer and http://www.nfcs.net for more information

Um, I've done operafestival di roma, as has Natalie Conte. NOT a scam. Your friend might be referring to "The NEW Operafestival di ROma" or one of the other gajillion sound-alike names. If you want info on the one whose website is www.operafest.org, I can provide.

sorry, www.operafest.com
BUT don't go unless you get a MAIN ROLE! Not enough opportunities for chorus, but a brilliant opportunity if you get a major role.

From: [identity profile] unbound-spirit.livejournal.com
Really?? Oh, its good you told me, cause I totally was just going to go for chorus. (I always just sort of assume by default that I'm not ready to do a principle role yet, but I guess that's something I need to discuss with my teacher.)

From: [identity profile] unbound-spirit.livejournal.com
You did it? Oh, do fill me in!!! Yeah I heard Natalie Conte did it and liked it. (since she's in my studio, my prof dispensed that info.)

By the way, when do we get our grades?

Ha, well, at least you didn't say 'your mom'.

I think I'm going to save those summers full of research for if/when I get into the DMA program. In the meantime, good luck to you!

Research your mom!

Actually I'm going to study how viruses affect the life cycle of aquatic microorganisms.

RESEARCH my mom?! What about DO my mom!!!

And come on, my mom's got plenty of viruses and enough water in her body to harbor some major aquatic microorganisms...so...you know you want to...

Maybe something at Lawrence-Livermore.
I will try and be a good girl and not do anything that might cause the world to blow up, I don't have my Masters yet!

True enough!

I meant more in the way that, I really wanna get my Masters and Doctorate before I chance to blow up the world, therefore making the achievement of an advanced degree impossible... :-)

I have been informed by members of my family that they insist upon attending a graduation ceremony whereupon I walk down the isle and up the stage Wearing a Hood! before I do anything else. *sigh* Yes Daddy!...

well I would like to do Opera north...but I would also like to be ok already and not be dealing with so much crap you know? I might just take the summer off and work and try and fix myself still. I just dont see me doing well in a summer program...and that makes me very sad :( I need a remedy.

I totally understand that. I didn't do any summer programs the entire time I was an undergrad for the same reason. I needed the summer to reflect and work on myself and get stronger emotionally. Sometimes that's just what you need. Sometimes its better to just allow yourself that time rather than pushing yourself to live away from home in some uncomfortable, new situation for a few weeks just for another resume credit.

If possible, if it works out, I`m going back to NJ for a few weeks to get my cat so my visa in Germany can renew again so I can be a Fremdsprachenassistentin (aka: Gymnasiumbitch!) again!

Kitty!!!! Are you bringing your cat back to Germany with you? (I seriously think I miss my cat more than my family sometimes when I'm away from home:/) Haha, Gymnasiumbitch. Well, you're my favorite gymnasiumbitch, miranda. :)

Is your cat's name Einstein? That's awesome! My last cat's name was Elliot, named after T.S. Elliot because of his Book of Practical Cats. But Elliot died :(:(:( And my mom got to name our current cats, so they are Sidney and Emma. Yeah, weird names, but whatever, I still love them a ton!

Sound like some good ideas so far. Look forward to seeing the oil painting soon.

This summer? I have no clue. Kinda going back to the idea I was hoping for last summer and see if I can move out or something. For now, I guess that's one and maybe find a full time job and start saving up some moola again. Also been thinking about going back to Peru, though wish I had someone to go with. Guess that's about it.

Stay coolz =D

If you're interested in learning a new language, you could also do Middlebury's total immersion language program.

That's the "language program in Vermont" I was referring to in the post. I couldn't think of the name as I was writing it. Evidently a lot of people from Peabody have done it with excellent results.

I'll probably be excavating in Greece or Italy again. Interviewing for a position on Thursday in Montreal! Summer seems so far away....

I've been curious about the JHU CTY program. Heard some good things about it, and I may apply for summer 07. Anything to possibly get me back to Baltimore, or anywhere besides here.

Date: 2006-01-04 04:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] unbound-spirit.livejournal.com
hmmm lets see Greece/Italy or Baltimore...yeah I think you should go with Greece/Italy!!! Good luck with the Montreal interview!

The thing with JHU CTY though is that the programs are at other colleges all over the country, so depending on what program you want to teach for, you could get stuck in some really lame place for three weeks (like, Carlisle, PA). On the other hand, you could get to go to California or some nice place like that. I think they're starting to accept applications now, so there's still time if you're interested!

My audition is at the end of February. I'm totally psyched, it would be awesome if we could do it together! I have no clue what role I'd like to study though....wow, that's something I guess I should start thinking about. haha, I've been doing so much weird 20th century music, I'm so out of the loop.
