It is definately. I learned a LOT. I would love to do it again if I could get some funding. The company is non-profit, so the money goes almost entirely to your room and board (hotel room plus two meals a day) but that's why it costs a lot. Its all legit, and very professional. I had a BLAST! I didn't get to go out on the town as many nights as I had hoped though, cause they kept us working hard, but I still had a really great time. I'm SO glad I did it.
You should do it! You can find ways to get cheap plane tickets and its not that expensive at all. You can get hotels and meals for dirt cheap prices if you know where to look.
Thanks. And... Well, it was a little weird putting on the habit at first, because I felt like I was being made up to be sent away to the convent for real. But then I realized it was just another costume and got over it.
So how does one raise money for the program? Even subletting my apartment isn't going to be enough money for the program....just some ideas..also where's the webpage where I can get the new application???
There are tons of ways to make money. You just have to find people who are looking to give money to the arts, write to them with a sort of self-promotion package, and say "I was accepted into this prestigeous prgram but I need financial help to get there" and then talk about the program and what it offers and how it will help your career. I know tons of people who have done it. My roommate from the program got over $3,000 that way. Then there's the fundraising recital. Give a "send me to Rome" recital, and give out info on the program, etc, and have people make donations to your cause. There are tons of ways to do it. The application for next year probably won't be up on the site for several months yet. Maybe November or December? I don't know. I filled out the application in January so I don't know when they update the site.
check the libraries for the yearly registry of Foundations and Corporations. Look through there. That should tell you what groups are looking to fund the arts, and whether or not they accept "solicitation" (meaning whether or not they'll be cool with you just sending them a letter or package out of the blue.)
When I did it, I was working for NJ State Opera on a Funding Research assignment, so I was looking for people who were aiming to fund large companies, not individuals. I gave all that info over to NJ State Opera while I was working for them, so I don't have any of it anymore. I managed to pay for the trip by having several family members pool together the cash, as well as cashing in on a bond I got when I was born. So I haven't done the individual-sepcialized research in a while. All I can tell you is that there are people who will give you money and you can find a lot of them by looking through the foundation registry.
I did the auditions for Operafestival in D.C. in February, and I didn't find the website until a few weeks before that, so I couldn't really tell you when they will post the new application. If the NYC auditions are in December, then yeah obviously they will post it before then, my bad. But your best bet is to just check the website every now and then.
thanks for all your help Pamina...btw the MET is doing a NEW production of Barbiere di Sevilia, do you and Rich want to go?? I'm bringing my boyfriend and hopefully my friend Kim and her boyfriend Whit.....it would be SOOO FUN :-) Family Circle Seats of course...let me know if you want to, and we'll find a way to get all the tickets so we can sit together! It's in November :-)
I know you might not check this, because it was so far back but I'm looking at all those pictures and am getting SOOO excited about going to Rome and doing the program....I got cast in a LOT of stuff, i'm doing every performance thing...vocal recital, opera scene, suor angelica, and also Don Giovanni Chorus....(which is one scene anyway)
Sigh, I cannot wait...and cesar is meeting me in Rome the last week :)
